  • Workshops are held in colleges and universities around the Bay Area.
  • We try to select venues in different locations across the year, though are limited in availability, the need for a large number of music rooms and pianos, and consideration of other budget and facility requirements of the workshop.
  • Past and future venues include: College of Marin, Dominican College, and San Jose State University.

  • CMNC Workshops are open to intermediate and advanced string, wind and piano players. We require that you have some chamber music experience prior to applying.
  • CMNC Workshops accept these instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinet, french horn, bassoon and piano. Other instruments may be accepted in pre-formed groups or at the discretion of the workshop director.

  • CMNC is a non-profit organization. Fees are calculated to cover the workshop budget which includes facility costs, catering, coach fees, and workshop materials, among other expenditures. All board members volunteer their hours to make the workshops happen.

  • Workshop assignments and fellow group members are communicated to accepted applicants a few weeks prior to a workshop.
  • Attendees should familiarize themselves with their assignments, so as to participate more fully in the coached sessions, for example by listening to the music and/or practicing their part.
  • Attendees can request scans of their parts from the CMNC Library ahead of time, but are encouraged to first look on IMSP or other sources, so as not to overwhelm the librarian.
  • If time and geography allows, some workshop groups contact each other ahead of time for a read through.

  • Attendees should bring their own music stand. Instrument supplies such as extra strings or reeds are highly encouraged to prevent unforeseen instrument disablement.
  • Optional items which are recommended: a battery-operated stand light, seat cushions, pencils, clothing layers (AC or heating is not always predictable or controllable), water bottle, and your own reusable utensils.
  • Attendees can bring their own music parts if desired, but keep in mind that different editions may have different labeling and measure numbering.
  • Note: if you are pre-formed you must bring your own music, and a score for the coach.
